Description

This ocean effect was created using one plane and the Blender "clouds" texture used as a normal map along with some reflection. This is not the most accurate or realistic method of recreating the ocean but can still get the job done. Just like all things, this has its limitations.

NOT CONFIGURED FOR CYCLES

Could be used for:
  • Shots of the ocean
  • Airplane/jet scenes
  • Things hovering above water
Not recommended (But still possible to some extent):
  • Underwater shots
  • Objects rising/falling through water
  • Waves
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS ONLY WORKS WITH RAYTRACE RENDERING
Unless you are using your own texture map (video or bitmap image), it cannot be previewed unless you press the "render" button or use the rendered material view in the viewfinder. This is because the texture is generated and isn't only a single image.

Hey, check out the ocean modifier buddy ;)

Yes, I know, but the ocean modifier uses a lot of polygons. This only uses one, therefore, saving time. I have since moved to cycles, rendering this method useless for me.
