This tracked tractor was developed to serve in the snow and mud conditions of the Eastern Front. Developed by Steyr during 1942, it used the transmission of the standard 1½ ton Truck. The suspension was entirely tracked, although crude, and this caused excessive vibration in service. The suspension wheels were all steel, without rubber tires, and springing was by leaf springs. Ground clearance was 21½ inches which enabled the vehicle to perform well in extreme conditions. RSO tractors were to replace all light half-tracked tractors. The RSO was mainly used to tow 50mm, 75mm Pak guns, and light howitzers. It served a variety of other roles and served on both fronts. Over 28,000 vehicles were produced between 1942 to 1945.This particular vehicle is outfitted with a 2cm Flak 38 anti-aircraft gun. The Flak 38 became the standard AA gun for the German army in 1939. The Flak 38 was the single barreled version. This gun had 360 degree rotation operation and could elevate to 90 degrees.
