The Perry Class of Frigates was designed in the 1970s for the United States Navy to replace aging WWII era Gearing and Sumner class Destroyers. The Frigate is a smaller Warship capable of escorting and inexpensive enough to be built in large numbers. Generally they were operated to protect fleets or groups of ships from attack by submarines. They are 445 foot or 453 foot vessels depending on Flight I or Flight III design variant. 55 were built in the US, 51 for the USN and 4 for the RAN Australian Navy. These ships also provide the capability to fight aerial attacks by aircraft and some types of anti-ship missiles. The Perry class served the United States Navy very well in peacetime and wartime. These ships have been involved in every conflict since the late 1970s. Other countries also built this design including Australia and China. Several countries now operate the Perry Class Frigate including Poland, Pakistan, Taiwan, Bahrain, Egypt, and Turkey. Many after being decommissioned were sold to other countries for use in their navies. Poland, Pakistan, Turkey and Egypt operate Perry Class Ships that have been sold out of the United States Navy and after conversion, renamed and taken into service into their new navies. The Perry class frigates had a design flaw in that the aluminum superstructure tended to crack under stress. The USS Duncan had a 40 foot crack in her super structure before the problem was ultimately repaired and a redesign fix corrected the problem. This is a high polygon model of the Perry Class Frigate.
