The Panzer IV, conceived by General Guderian as a support tank for Panzer IIIs, was the workhorse of the Panzer Division. Although it was slow to come into production, the Panzer IV soon revealed its fine balance between protection, firepower, and mobility. It became the backbone of the panzer forces. Production of the Panzer IV Ausf. D stopped in May of 1941with 229 of this version being built.
