Omschrijving

Name of the specimen: "Lucky Dorothy" Triangles: 618570 Vertices: 309449 Genus: Doryaspis sp. (Heterostraci, Pteraspidiformes) Meaning: "Dart S hield" Information: Doryaspis is an extinct genus of primitive jawless fish that lived in the early Devonian around 419 to 393 M.a. It is usually preserved as isolated dermal bone plates, and there are only known two complete specimens from the deposits of Vestspisbergen, Svalbard. Some characteristic features of the genus are the canteen-shaped body armor, the large serrated branchial plates that extend out and curve downward in a triangular shape, and an element of the median oral plates (that would correspond to the lower lip or chin in gnathostomes) that extends out in a long rod-shaped appendage, called the "pseudorostrum." The tail is long and slender, and has large rows of thick scales (Vincent Noel 2003). Diet: There are no data regarding the diet of this genus, but the front spike may have been used to stir up soft sediment to expose small invertebrates or organic matter that could then be sucked into the jawless mouth. Habitat: Doryaspis is recorded in the Wood Bay Formation. Sediments of the Early Devonian of this formation represent continental molasse deposition under arid to semi-arid climatic conditions in three main depositional environments (rivers, alluvial plains, perennial lakes) represented by characteristic lithologies, sedimentary structures, and microfacies (Friend and Moody-Stuart 2011).
