The ship was developed as an low cost alternative to the Type 037-II (Houjian class) missile craft introduced at the same time. Twenty-four were built by Shanghai based Qiuxin Shipyard between '91 and '97, with 6 sold to the Myanmar Navy in the mid 90's. -----------------
