One of the advanced fighter jets developed by the German scientist during World War II was Heinkel He 162 Volksjäger (People's Fighter). It was single-engine, jet-powered fighter aircraft fielded by the Luftwaffe. Nicknamed the Salamander or Sparrow by pilots, these were designed to be high altitude, trans sonic speed advanced light weight jet fighters. They were designed to be economic and easily maintained and their mission was to counter the huge threat of constant allied bombing of Germany. About 200 were produced before the end of the war but few ever saw combat.
