Japans Mt. Fuji is an active volcano about 100 kilometers southwest of Tokyo. Commonly called Fuji-san, its the countrys tallest peak, at 3,776 meters. A pilgrimage site for centuries, its considered one of Japans 3 sacred mountains, and summit hikes remain a popular activity. Its iconic profile is the subject of numerous works of art.

It is a dormant stratovolcano that last erupted in 17071708.

Mount Fuji lies about 100 kilometers south-west of Tokyo, and can be seen from there on a clear day. Mount Fuji's exceptionally symmetrical cone, which is snow-capped for about 5 months a year, is a well-known symbol of Japan.

Mount Fuji is one of Japan's "Three Holy Mountains" along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku.
