Ship project history: Cruiser was designed by P. Watts and became development of exported protected cruisers of 'Elswick' type. Though she had an armoured belt, but this belt was very narrow and raised over wl on 0.5m. On trials Esmeralda considerably exceeded designed machinery power and speed. Steel hull was wood and copper-sheathed.
Ship protection: 100.0m-long belt extended 0.6m above and 1.5m below lwl and was closed by 152mm bulkheads. Complete protective deck had 25mm thickness behind the belt and 51mm at the ends.
Modernizations: 1910: - 4 x 1 - 152/40
