In 2001, the Museum of Modern Art in New York asked Emeco and Philippe Starck to design a stool for a Ludwig Mies van der Rohe retrospective. The museums request was simple: Create a stool that Mies would have chosen for the exhibition himself. Simple and straightforward, the Emeco Stool (2001) is made using the same 77-step process that Emeco perfected to satisfy the militarys need for lightweight, corrosion-resistant chairs for submarines. The companys proprietary metal processing method yields aluminum three times stronger than steel and a stool so durable that it has an estimated life span of 150 years. Made from 80% recycled aluminum (40% post-consumer, 40% post-industrial), which requires only 5% of the energy needed to produce virgin aluminum.
