Description

This Dreamscape Studios 3D model is a high poly model with lots of details. The model includes a very detail rotary engine and propeller, guns, and cockpit. It is built very near to scale and fully textured. The materials and textures for this model as shown here are all included. The model also has animateable features including the ailerons, rudder, elevators, and wheels. The rotary engine and propeller are animated as they operated spinning. The model is also provided in several formats for your immediate downloading when purchased. Liveries of famous triplanes are also options. The Fokker DR-1 (driedecker) Triplane was designed as a fighter in response to the success of the Sopwith triplane fighter that began service in early 1917. The Sopwith triplane had outclassed the Albatross and other fighters then in service in Germany during WWI. The Fokker triplane was designed to use internally braced cantilever wings requiring no external bracing however it was found that simple struts made the entire tri wing structure less flexible and stronger. The aircraft was also designed with a lighter aluminum tube truss frame fuselage and a rotary engine. Testing and combat evaluation began in August 1917. The Fokker Triplane arrived on the front and was a success although not as much of a success as it fame suggested. It was slower than most allied fighters of its day in both level flight and a dive, and although it could climb very quickly initially, the weak rotary engine power was not adequate for performance above 4000 feet altitude. Early wing failures also required modification. Other deficiencies were also found and either dealt with or not as Germany by this time was struggling to maintain their war effort. I might note here, I saw a 1918 Fokker triplane (real one) for sale in 2007 for $15000 needing restoration.
