History: The glass armonica was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761.He designed it by mounting glass bowls along a metal spindle, turned by a flywheel and foot treadle.The instrument is played by moistening the fingers, and touching the rims of the turning glass bowls.Mozart and Beethoven, and other famous composers wrote pieces intended to be played on the glass armonica.The instrument fell out of popularity, as it gained a frightening reputation of driving men mad with its mesmerising sound.Now it is theorized that what actually happened was lead poisoning from long term exposure of the musicians to the lead paint that was used to mark the bowls.The glass armonica, though rare, is still produced and played today.
