Description
This is a scale model of a wooden dibinda or mbila (African marimba or xylophone) that I bought in Vilanculos in Mozambique. The original had no metal parts.
The Mbila (plural "Timbila") is associated with the Chopi people of the Inhambane Province, in southern Mozambique. It is a gourd-resonated, equal-ratio heptatonic-tuned instrument and is often played in large ensembles consisting of around ten xylophones of three or four sizes.
