Description

Name of the specimen: "Gentile Alice" Triangles: 536708 Vertices: 268356 Genus: Plesiosaurus sp. (Heterostraci, Pteraspidiformes) Meaning: "Near to lizards" Information: Plesiosaurus is an extinct genus of large sea reptiles that lived during the Early Jurassic period. It is distinguishable by its small head, long and slender neck, broad turtle-like body, a short tail, and two pairs of large, elongated paddles. It is known of several complete specimens, from the Lias of England. Despite its appearance, this group is not related to dinosaurs, but are included in a group of basal diapsids (with two foramens in the skull) known as Saurapterigia. Diet: Carnivore, its diet included ammonoids and smaller vertebrates. Habitat: Plesiosaurus is recorded from the marine deposits belonging to the famous Lias Group in Western Europe.
