Description of the tank
240-mm self-propelled howitzer T92 (240-mm Howitzer Motor Carriage T92) developed in the US in 1945. The successful use of 155-mm GMC M12 in the fighting on the European continent has inspired the creation of the Department of Artillery even more powerful self-propelled artillery. With the adoption of the heavy tank T26E3 in January 1945 there was a proposal to create a series of modern models of armored vehicles on the basis of a single chassis and a set of components and assemblies T26E3. Towed 240 mm howitzer M1918 is not considered to be particularly successful because of the difficulties with such a massive movement of weapons at the area, and the experience with the placement of 155-mm gun on the chassis of the series M3 / M4 pointed to the possibility of installing a 240-mm howitzer on the chassis, created on the basis of heavy tank T26E3. The same self-propelled guns could be used to accommodate the 8-inch (203-mm) gun.
SAU 240-millimeter howitzer self-propelled howitzer was designated T92, and the same chassis with 8-inch gun - self-propelled gun T93. Other machines were to be a series of heavy tank T26E3, Assault Tank T26E5, 8-inch self-propelled howitzer T84, T31 and the conveyor (later) T26E2 (M45). T92 Development approved in March 1945 and immediately issued an order for four prototypes of Chrysler (Detroit arsenal), only five were built T92.
Both machines use components and assemblies from the tank T26E3; engine, transmission, suspension. Unlike the tank drive wheels are rear and not the front. Both cars have the same lightweight chassis which is re, moving the driving wheel forward and aft set opener. The armament of the ACS could be interchanged. When creating a new ACS designers relied on the experience of creating a self-propelled howitzer T84. Big guns made to extend the size of the body and add one of rollers on each side compared to T26E3. It was possible to make it easier loosening armor protection; the thickest armor does not exceed 1 inch.
As in T26E3, from the new ACS had two driver; the driver and his assistant with its control mechanisms. Each of them had a turret with three observation units. Pinnacles are placed on the front sheet, which had a slope of 72 degrees from the vertical. SAU crew consisted of 8 people. Besides the two drivers, the rest of 6 people sitting on either side of the gun in the back of the machine. On the T92 and T93 are not romping ammunition. It was assumed that ACS will accompany conveyors T31 (cargo carrier T31), adapted for the carriage of heavy 8-inch or 240-mm ammunition. Especially for the T92 and T93 developed shots with concrete-shells. The relative disadvantage could be considered only a meager Ammunition - only 6 rounds.
The first ACS T92 was built in the beginning of July 1945 and after initial testing at the Aberdeen proving ground was sent to Fort Bragg test Artillery Committee. Aberdeen Proving Ground Tests revealed the need for a more powerful engine for such myashin.
