It was designed to replace the Sopwith Camel and came into service during the final weeks of the war. It wasn't fast for an aircraft from 1918 but it was very maneuverable and a great climber. It was easier to fly than the Sopwith Camel. It wasn't in service long enough during the war to do much but it was famous for one major engagement. In late October 1918 Canadian Major William G. Barker single handedly found itself in a fight with 15 enemy aircraft. He managed to shoot down four aircraft before being forced down over allied lines. He won the Victoria Cross for this action
