PT-109 was the first PT boat commanded by Lt JG John F. Kennedy future president of the United States. This boat was cut in half by a Japanese Destroyer in Blackett Straits in the Solomon Islands. Most of the crew were rescued due to the leadership and courage of Kennedy and his officers. He would go on to command another boat, PT 159.
