PT boats were a variety of torpedo-armed fast attack craft used by the United States Navy in World War II to attack larger surface ships. "PT" is the US hull classification symbol for "Patrol Torpedo".
The Elco Naval Division boats were the longest of the three types of PT boats built for the Navy used during World War II.
PT-109 was the first PT boat commanded by Lt JG John F. Kennedy future president of the United States. This boat was cut in half by a Japanese Destroyer in Blackett Straits in the Solomon Islands. Most of the crew were rescued due to the leadership and courage of Kennedy and his officers.
He would go on to command another boat, PT 159.
